Pictured below is Wade Huffman, M.D. in Sudan in 2008. This was Dr. Huffman’s 6th trip to Africa. He went with Safe Harbor International Relief to encourage the local church, help the clinic, see patients and help build a new clinic. Here is what he had to say about it:
“There are no roads or vehicles in the area. We obtained sand for the making of cement by bringing sand from the river bank by wheel barrow 1.5 miles away. The "well-to-do" if they are fortunate, ride bicycles. Everybody else walks.”
“The weather is hot. We were there from Oct. 6 – Nov. 11, at the end of the rainy season. The rain brings a little refreshing coolness, but rapidly becomes suffocating humidity when it stops. As dry season sets in, the days are cloudless with temperatures in the 110s. All heavy work must be done early in the morning, as by noon it is quite hot. After about 5pm it starts to cool off, and another hour or two of work can be done. The midday "siesta" isn't really a tradition, it is mandatory! This is a true frontier missions and development effort. The team in Nyimbuli has had wells drilled that represent the first clean water that the community has ever had. It is truly humbling and inspiring to work with the dedicated staff there."
Pictured below is Perry Stahlman of Brentwood giving away his Luken LogoWear to a young Russian boy in Siberia. Perry recently traveled across 14 time zones to teach and instruct a coalition of church leaders in one of the colder places on the planet. (Russia itself encompasses 11 time zones compared to 4 in the US). His trip was in support of the Antioch Initiative of the Slavic Gospel Association.
Several of the facilities Perry visited had no indoor plumbing. By Thanksgiving time, local temperatures in Baikalsk had dipped to -75 degrees and can plunge to -100 (not counting wind-chill factor) by mid-winter. Imagine an outhouse in that weather!
Pictured below is the Clifton family in front of Mont Saint-Michel on their recent trip to Normandy, France. Steve is an attorney with HCA and Sharon manages the household and volunteers her time with a number of organizations. Marshall is a senior and Sarah is a freshman at Brentwood Academy.

Bill Cooper is showing off a big smile and his Luken LogoWear. Bill is standing with Scott and Misty Cooper, his son and daughter-in-law (taking the picture is Bill's lovely wife Charlene). They're smiling because they have just finished a 15K race (that's a little over 9 miles) in Jacksonville, FL. Despite 40 mph winds, Bill said it was "a great day, a great race and my best pace ever." That kind of positive energy contributed to his successful career at Aladdin Industries. For several years now he has been a professional grandfather, a runner, and a snow skier.
Look for Bill at the Country Music 1/2 Marathon in Nashville. Thanks for the inspiration, Bill. We have appreciated knowing you all these years.
It's almost that time again: Time for the children in your life 14-years old and younger to get ready for the 4th of July Luken Kids' Race at the Maryland Farms YMCA. The race is 3/4 of a mile and begins at 8:00 a.m. after the Cadillac 5k (which starts at 7:00 a.m.).
