Why Every Financial Plan Needs a Buffer for the Unexpected

We recently began a major office renovation. As you can imagine, a project like this comes with plenty of moving parts—and a few surprises. But it also reminded us of one of the most important principles in financial planning: expect the unexpected.

Building with Shock Absorbers

As the construction began to take shape, we discovered some unforeseen structural issues—specifically in the ceiling. Our engineers quickly determined that we needed to install additional bracing to prevent a potentially serious problem with the roof. Fortunately, our builder, DWC, had built financial shock absorbers into the project budget. That cushion allowed us to address the issue without derailing the entire renovation.

It was a powerful reminder: in both construction and financial planning, surprises are inevitable. But with the right strategy in place, they don’t have to become disasters.

Why You Need Financial Shock Absorbers

The same principle applies to your personal finances and retirement plan. Life is full of unexpected events—medical costs, home repairs, job transitions, market volatility. Without a buffer, these surprises can create unnecessary stress or force you to change your long-term goals.

At Luken Wealth Management, we believe in building margin into your financial plan. That might include emergency savings, flexible withdrawal strategies, or conservative projections that anticipate the unknown. Our goal is to help you stay on track—even when life throws a curveball.

Expect the Unexpected—And Plan for It

The lesson here is simple but important: The unexpected happens with such regularity, we should expect it. Just like we wouldn’t build a roof without proper bracing, we shouldn’t build a retirement or investment plan without room for the unknown.

Whether you're renovating a home or preparing for retirement, planning with margin gives you the freedom to handle life's surprises with confidence.
